A one-year contract extension valued at $12 million has been awarded to BAE Systems Australia to support the Royal Australian Navy’s Hydrographic fleet until 2020.

The contract extension is related to BAE System Australia’s In Service Support contract, which is valued at around $436 million.

Around 60 employees based in Cairns are directly employed by this project.

Under the contract, BAE Systems supports the RAN’s two Hydrographic Ships, HMA Ships Leeuwin and Melville; four Survey Motor Launches, HMA Ships Paluma, Mermaid, Benalla, and Shepparton; and six Survey Motor Boats (SMBs), as well as two SMBs in the Hydrographic school and one SMB that supports surveys in the Antarctic.

It is estimated that at least 30 local companies in Cairns are directly involved with BAE Systems Australia’s work supporting the Hydrographic fleet.

The company is designing and implementing the transition model and subsequent ISS contractual framework on behalf of the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group and RAN.
